National French Fry Day

July 13th is national french fry day: a holiday celebrating one of America’s favorite side orders and staple of the fast food industry. Of course french fries, which are so delicious, are not the most healthy snack for you. So in honor of National french fry day, here are a few tips for making your french fry obsession a little easier on your waste line:

Steal Your Kids Fries: Don’t order your own.

Resist the urge to supersize. It’s easy to go nuts when the food is right in front of you. To help you cut out the calories of your next french fry binge, resist the urge to supersize. A medium order of french fries from McDonalds clocks in at nearly 400 calories and 19 grams of fat. The fries that come in the kid’s meals on the other hand are a mere 100 calories and only 5 grams of fat.

The “fry” part matters

French fries are so delicious because they are cooked in boiling oil. And there is really no way to get around that fat filled fact without significantly compromising the taste of the french fry. But, some oils are healthier than others. Cooking fries in peanut oil, for example, like the fries from Five Guys, is a bit healthier than fries cooked in lard or animal fat.

Shoe string v steak fries: Think is thin!

Fries come in all sorts of varieties, from shoe string, to curly, to crinkle, to waffle, and even steak fries. Which type of french fry is healthier? The thicker kinds, which provide more potato per fried surface area.

“I’ll have an order of french fries, hold the potato…”

While potatoes may get a bad wrap, there is no question that green veggies are healthier than starchy spuds. So, sub out the potato for another vegetable. The delicious avocado fries recipe above is but one of the many options for making your french fry obsession a little healthier.
